FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 16, 2018 – At approximately 20:30 hours (EST), the SIM (Service de sécurité incendie de Montréal) received an emergency call stating that a mattress had caught on fire in a basement apartment at 2840 Granby Avenue in the Longue-Pointe district of Montréal, QC. The call also stated that one individual was trapped inside their apartment and unable to evacuate. Upon arrival, firefighters found several rooms inside the apartment affected by fire and focused on finding and evacuating the trapped resident. They managed to do so and helped the resident, an elderly woman, out of the building and into a fire truck on the scene to shelter her from the cold. Officers with the SPVM (Service de police de la Ville de Montréal) also attended the scene and were likely the first to arrive, running throughout the apartment complex and making sure all residents were safely evacuated. Firefighters can be seen smashing out the apartment’s windows at the front of the building to vent the smoke inside and gutting the apartment’s walls in search of hot spots at the rear of the building. The elderly woman who had been trapped inside was transported to hospital for possible smoke inhalation. No other injuries were reported, only material damages were sustained. At about 21:20 hrs, firefighters terminated the intervention and began leaving the scene.
